Adventures in Driving at Night

So we went to a happy hour / social tonight for new teachers at TAISM [The American International School of Muscat] pronounced here as "Tay-zim" Lots of nice folks there. 4 teaching couples that had been working in China and knew each other before coming to Muscat. Pretty neat job, making the international schools circuit. Lots of kids as well, which was great for our kids.

But the fun really began upon leaving the party...

For those of you who are worried about where this story is going... please remember that there is no "dangerous" part of Muscat, or really of Oman for that matter. Trust us... it's true.

So, after getting a few quick directions on how to get to 18th of November Street.... "why 18th of November Street" you may ask? That's the Sultan's Birthday which also happens to be Omani National Day [kind of like their 4th of July] And Pop's Birthday as well.

Sorry.... so we're on the road. I turn here... turn there and we're on our way home....

Katy: Do you know where you're going?
Danny: Sure. I just keep the ocean on my left, the highway on my right and we'll make it home

Flash forward 25 minutes-

Katy: Why is the ocean on our right?
Danny: What?
Katy: The ocean is on our right dear.
Grace: Are we lost?
Danny: No. Stop talking.
Nicholas: Are we lost?
Danny: I said stop talking.
Amelia: Nick are we lost?

Oh well, at least we know what the 1o miles north of town looks like. And we're safe at home, having a good chuckle about the whole thing.

  1. So funny! I used to think it was odd that every place we visited in Ireland involved some sort of directions to or from "the Coast Road" until I figured out that you can literally drive all the way around the country along the coast on basically the same road!
